The Walt Bodine Show - 7/9/2010 Kansas City History Series: Famous Prisoners of Leavenworth | ||||||||||||||
|
Few cities in America can claim the penitentiary prominence of Leavenworth, Kansas. Home to five correctional facilities, the city is most famous for the federal “Big House” that opened there in 1906. Over the years, it has been the temporary home of some of America’s most famous criminals, including Al Capone, “Machine Gun” Kelly and the Birdman of Alcatraz. Walt Bodine is joined by local historians to talk about the prisons and some of the well-known scofflaws who have inhabited their confines. Plus, we visit with the author of a new book on Capone about the life and times of the man. Monroe Dodd, co-host, historian Stephen Spence, archives specialist, Kansas City branch, National Archives Jonathan Eig, author, Get Capone: The True Stor of Al Capone
